In furtherance to the Malacca Bar’s Circular No. 37 of 2021, in which a campaign to collect funds for our Malacca Bar Executive Secretary, Mr. Kennies Cheong’s heart surgery was organized, we are pleased to confirm that a sum of RM18,000.00 was collected as at 31st May 2021 and this was made possible as Members and Pupils in Chambers of the Malacca Bar had generously donated and spread the word of this fund raising programme to other State Bar Members as well as to the members of public.

The Malacca Bar would like to take this opportunity to inform members that Mr. Kennies Cheong has successfully undergone the much needed surgery at Serdang Hospital and is now recuperating. We wish that members will continue to keep Mr. Kennies Cheong in their prayers.

With the sum collected, we will now be able to assist Mr. Kennies to continue with his follow up treatment. Although the actual sum needed could not be specified at the time of the collection, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and generous contributions.

On 2nd April 2021, Mr. Muhammad Rafique bin Rashid Ali, an avid trainer of advocacy courses and much sought-after counsel for appellate briefs and issues on the subject of criminal law and human rights, gave a talk at the Malacca Bar Auditorium on the topic of “Criminal Appeal: Defence Work During Trial & The Criminal Appeal”.

The talk was held from 3.00pm – 5.00pm and was attended by 29 participants comprising members of the Bar, pupils as well as MMU attachment students. Mr. Rafique delivered the talk with his usual candour and eloquence. The topic covered criminal trial advocacy tips for the defence, as well as common pitfalls and best practices for submissions at the appellate stage.

At the end of the session, Mr. Rafique still took in questions from the floor and graciously shared practical tips from the many criminal matters he was involved in.
.
For that, the Malacca Bar wishes to thank Mr. Rafique for taking time off from his busy schedule to deliver this talk.

On 23rd March 2021, the Malacca Bar Committee, represented by the Chairman, Nitin Kumar Gordhan, and the Conveyancing Practice Subcommittee Chairman, Chen Vi Vian, had a fruitful discussion with the Pejabat Tanah dan Galian (PTG) Melaka in respect of land dealings in Melaka.

The Malacca Bar Committee was represented by Andrew Law Ching Hui and Teoh Keat Wee of the main Committee, and Datuk B.K. Goh, Datin Siah Li Mei, and Puan Hajjah Dina Bt Hj Nordin of the Conveyancing Practice Subcommittee.

The officers from the PTG were Tuan Mohamad Samsi Bin Kamarudin (Timbalan Pengarah Pendaftaran) who represented the Pengarah, Nabilah bt Nizam, Nik Farah Binti Nik Nubli, Rosbiana bt Abdul Razak, Norhafizah binti Zamani, Norwati Binti Kadir, Norazimah bt Mansor, Mohd Iqbal bin Abdul Razif and Sazali Bin Ibrahim.

Farewell courtesy visit on 26th March 2021 to Pengarah Mahkamah Negeri Melaka YBhg Dato’ Haji Mohd Nasir Bin Nordin, who will be transferred to Penang as the Pengarah Mahkamah Negeri Pulau Pinang with effect from 1st April 2021.

Wishing Dato’ Haji Mohd Nasir much joy, happiness and best wishes as Dato’ begins a new chapter in Penang after a long service in Malacca. Dato’ will be missed by the Malacca Bar members and also by the Malacca Bar Committee 2021/2022 who wishes Dato’ a warm farewell

The Malacca Bar Committee, on behalf of the Bar Council, presented a cheque under the Law Care Fund to the beneficiary of the late Thara Singh Sidhu in a simple private ceremony held on 18th January 2021. Present at the ceremony were his widow, Madam Vasanthakumari and his son Harkrishan Singh.
The Malacca Bar was represented by its Chairman, Mr. Jaspal Singh Gill, Malacca Bar Representative to the Bar Council, Mr. Nitin Kumar Gordhan, and Malacca Bar Secretary, Ms. Radiance Chin.
