Talk: Ethics of Young Lawyers In and Out of the Courtroom (28 April 2022)

On 28 April 2022, from 2.30 pm – 4.30 pm, 34 participants (31 pupils and 3 members) attended a talk at the Malacca Bar Auditorium to hear from Mr. Desmond Ho Chee Cheong and Mr. Purshotaman A/L Puvanendran about ethics young lawyers should be mindful of in and out of the courtroom.

Mr. Desmond shared about the various do’s and don’t’s in and out of the courtroom from a civil litigation lawyer’s perspective, such as not treating the courtroom as a dressing room (by putting on your robes while the court is in session), and making sure a lawyer is on the other end of the line of a telephone call with a fellow lawyer.

Mr. Purshotaman, a criminal law practitioner, shared, among other things, about the influence of a senior lawyer who made sure he was in court at least an hour earlier to prepare himself mentally to be in the “battlefield”.

In a surprise turn of events, some participants were called on to creatively prepare their submissions on mitigation and received valuable feedback from Mr. Purshotaman and Mr. Desmond on their impromptu performance.

The talk ended at 4.30 pm, and the Chairlady, Ms. Amber Foo presented tokens of appreciation to the speakers.
