Dear Friends at the Bar,
CRIMINAL LAW TRAINING
The Skills Training Committee has made great efforts in organising a training session for those of you who may be interested in getting started as a criminal law practitioner. The selection of speakers, conductors of the moots, moderators and special invites to introduce and conclude the training session reflects the quality of training that we have put together for you.
We have lined-up lawyers who are exceptionally skillful and highly specialised in their respective areas of criminal practice. The team led by Mr Jagjit Singh will share their knowledge in conducting criminal trials and the issues involved. This team of lawyers, in spite of their demanding schedule would be there at the Law Faculty, University of Malaya on 24th and 25th August 2007 to share their knowledge, experience and expertise.
COURSE STRUCTURE
In order to ensure that you would greatly benefit from this training session, we have divided the training session to two parts. In the first part of the session, Mr Jagjit Singh, a senior criminal defence lawyer and other senior practitioners, would talk about pre-trial preparation as well as the salient aspects of the criminal trial itself. Since cross-examination is often touted as the most important aspect of criminal defence and the only and ultimate weapon available to defence lawyers, a practical workshop would be also conducted. Hence, participants would have a hands-on experience in this area under the personal guidance of this senior criminal defence lawyer- a rare opportunity indeed.
The second part of this training would consist of a mock trial. The participants will be briefed and asked to conduct the cross-examination and the facilitators would evaluate them.
OBJECTIVES
Our aim is to create a pool of able lawyers who would acquire advocacy skills in conducting criminal trials competently. Having acquired these skills, these lawyers would then be expected, from time to time, to assist the poor, the underprivileged members of our society who seek assistance at the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) and the various State Legal Aid Centres.
To ensure a continuity in the training, we are also trying to create a “buddy system” whereby experienced criminal defence lawyers would be asked to take a group of junior practitioners under their wings and guide them through the criminal defence work. This would ensure that the participants are assured of continued support from the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur).

ADVANTAGES
Participants would be able to meet with senior criminal practitioners who have carved a name for themselves in the annals of the Malaysian legal system. The knowledge gained at this training programme would be a life-long investment in obtaining legal skills, which cannot be obtained in any textbooks.
As we intend to make this programme a worthwhile project for both the participants as well as the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) we now cordially invite you to sign up for this training session and join us on the 24th and 25th August 2007 from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm (both days) at the Tun Mohamed Suffian Auditorium, Law Faculty of University Malaya.
