22nd. October, 2007

To All Members of the Bar

UPDATE ON UNDER-PRIVILEGED, ORPHANED AND ABUSED CHILDREN’S DAY OUT 2007

Further to the previous circular on this matter, the Malacca Bar Committee is pleased to update members on the progress for the said event.

Kindly be informed that the organizations who have confirmed their participation for this year’s event are the Salvation Army’s Lighthouse Children’s Home, Sri Ramakrishna Ashram, Rumah Anak Yatim Darul Aitam Bukit Pegoh and Seck Kia Eenh’s Mudita Home.

However, due to concerns with some exams faced around that time, we regret to inform that the supervisors and children from Fatima Home had to withdraw their participation this year. Nevertheless, the inclusion of the orphans from Rumah Anak Yatim Darul Aitam Bukit Pegoh for this year’s event will still see us playing host to approximately 100 children.

As such, we reiterate our appeal to members for generous donations to cover the cost of the event (particularly directing it to those who wish to spread the cheer of Syawal, the joy of the coming Deepavalli or who merely wish to fortify the hearts of our young ones), to make their cheques payable to the Malacca Bar Committee. The event’s particulars are as follows:

Date    :    27th. October, 2007 (Saturday)
Time    :    1.00 – 2.30 p.m.
Venue    :    The Malacca Club, Rotunda, Tanjong Kling

Please note that if there is any surplus of donations, the same will be allocated towards any one or all of the homes listed above.

Over and above donations, members of the Bar and their children are all invited for the function. We hope that members will be able to find the time to turn up with their children and make the occasion even merrier. The cost per Member is RM10.00 while children are free.
However, for catering purposes, members are kindly requested to fill up the reply slip with the number of children attending annexed with the earlier circular on or before 23RD. OCTOBER, 2007 (TUESDAY). We look forward to seeing members and their children there this Saturday.

Yours faithfully,
(Nizam Bashir)
Chairman
Liason, Charity and Welfare Committee

Time    :    1.00 – 2.30 p.m.

The Malacca Bar was represented by about 20 members for the historic march that was triggered off by the VK Lingam video clip fiasco. Many were not happy with our Chief Justice, Tan Sri Ahmad Fairuz’s “no comments” and denial through Nazri. Therefore, the few that took up the challenge to travel to Putrajaya met at the Bar Committee office first before leaving together for Putrajaya.

We reached Putrajaya in time but the first 3 entry points to Precinct 3 Putrajaya were blocked by the police. No explanation offered. We were getting agitated in the van and wanted to confront them. Vehicles were randomly allowed or denied access to the roads. We managed to get through the third entry point (possibly because our van only had a Manipal car sticker and not a Bar one?) where else the other two cars were not that successful. The behavior of the police puzzled us. What are they trying to do?
