Life as a lawyer is no bed of roses. It is challenging, stressful, and let’s face it, the money isn’t that great especially if you are a young lawyer. But the rewards are there if you look hard enough.

As the Chairman of the Malacca Bar, Mr. Ng Kong Peng puts it, lawyers help to put things right. Lawyers help give custody of the children to a parent in a divorce case, lawyers help beneficiaries get what they need when a will is drafted and lawyers help purchasers get their dream homes in drawing up sales and purchase agreement. In short, it isn’t all just about Ringgit and sen or the pursuit of that coveted partnership in a top law firm.

These were points which were touched upon by Ng in his speech during the Malacca Bar Annual Dinner and Dance held at the Ramada Hotel on 11th August.

This year’s event which saw a record turn-out of 350 diners was graced by Tuan Mohtarudin bin Baki, Judge of the Malacca High Court. His Lordship noted in His Lordship’s speech that lawyers should renew their commitment to the rule of law. Lawyers must also prepare their cases well, speak clearly and maintain decorum at all times. As for members of the Bench, His Lordship said that judicial officers must listen to counsel patiently and avoid making derogatory comments from the Bench and give a fair hearing to parties in every case.

The annual games between the Malacca Bar and the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Malacca Branch was held on Saturday, 28.7.2007 at the Malacca Club Sports Complex in Tanjung Kling, Melaka. Among the games played were badminton, table tennis, squash, netball, snooker and soccer. Netball was called off eventually due to the lack of players from MMA.

The Malacca Bar started the ball rolling with an emphatic win through our first doubles in badminton where the pair of Kelvin and Muhamad Faizal won with a score of 15-9, 15-5. Malacca Bar easily thumped the MMA 6-1 and MMA won the only consolation point after defeating our last double of T.S Moi and Aloysius.

Talk presented by Damian Yeo at a Seminar on Building Industry Solution’s To Sustainable Development held on 7th August 2007 in Putra World Trade Centre organized by CIDB Malaysia.

I must take this opportunity to thank the organizers for allowing me to deliver this piece. This topic is of great importance but unfortunately there is a lack of awareness of its importance.

What is Intellectual Property?

We protect our tangible properties in our daily life. We install alarms in cars and houses to deter ‘breakins’. We lodge caveats in the land office when we purchase property to avoid unauthorized dealings with our property. We know the boundaries and limitations in protecting our tangible properties because we are able to see, touch and feel them. So what about intellectual property then?

Almost everyone in society is a user and potential creator of intellectual property. Its protection, through a system of national and international rules called intellectual property rights, is necessary to provide incentives and financing for innovation and creation, which in turn leads to economic, cultural and social progress. Protection for intellectual property also encourages the production and dissemination of knowledge and a wide range of quality goods and services. As such Intellectual property rights add value for consumers and can provide a guarantee of where it comes from and its quality.

Dear Friends at the Bar,

The Skills Training Committee has made great efforts in organising a training session for those of you who may be interested in getting started as a criminal law practitioner. The selection of speakers, conductors of the moots, moderators and special invites to introduce and conclude the training session reflects the quality of training that we have put together for you.

We have lined-up lawyers who are exceptionally skillful and highly specialised in their respective areas of criminal practice. The team led by Mr Jagjit Singh will share their knowledge in conducting criminal trials and the issues involved. This team of lawyers, in spite of their demanding schedule would be there at the Law Faculty, University of Malaya on 24th and 25th August 2007 to share their knowledge, experience and expertise.
