Malacca Bar Committee organised the 8th Advance Legal Workshop and Sharing Moments on 15th January 2022. The workshop was conducted physically at the Malacca Bar Auditorium from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm with 46 registered participants. The said Workshop was organized with full and strict compliance of the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP).

The Workshop was tailored for Young Lawyers (below 3 years in practice) and Pupils in Chambers, where no fee was charged . The following Speakers were invited to share with the participants some important insights into the following topics: –

a. Mr. Chia Cheng Wee – Overview on “Civil Litigation Practice”;

b. Mr. Pierre Lim Vey Yeow – “Conveyancing Practice”;

c. Mr. Bala Gopal Kerisnan – “Court’s Etiquette & Decorum”;

d. Mr. Mohd Faiezad Bin Razali – “Criminal Litigation Practice in Malaysia”;

e. Mr. Desmond Ho Chee Cheong – “Moments with the Bar”.

At the end of each session, the Speakers took in questions from the floor and selflessly shared with the participants practical tips that may take years to gather. For that, the Malacca Bar Committee wish to thank the Speakers for taking time off from their busy schedule in making this Workshop a success.

On 14th December 2021, the Malacca Bar Committee organized its first ever hybrid interactive talk with Mr. Nahendran Navaratnam on the topic “The Art of Advocacy”, wherein participants had the option of joining either physically at the Malacca Bar auditorium, or virtually through Zoom.

The event drew great interest from members of the Bar as well as Pupils.  In total 62 participants registered as at the closing date, out of which 8 participants opted for physical attendance at the auditorium. The session was moderated by our Malacca Bar member Mr. Wong Fook Meng, which covered various practical aspects of advocacy.

As the talk was styled in an interview setting, participants gained valuable insight into the various challenges of the life of an experienced advocate.

The Malacca Bar Committee had a meeting with the Judges and Judicial Officers of the Malacca Court today in respect of matters affecting the legal practice in the Melaka Courts.
The Bench was led by YA Datuk Anselm Charles Fernandis, High Court Judge, while the Malacca Bar Committee was led by its Chairman, Nitin Kumar Gordhan.

The Malacca Bar Committee wishes to express its sincere thanks to the Judges and Judicial Officers for hosting the said meeting. The meeting adhered strictly to the SOPs.

KUALA LUMPUR BAR v MALACCA BAR SPORTS SERIES 2021

On the 4th of December 2021, the Malacca Bar Committee welcomed members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar (KL Bar) and members of the Malacca Bar to the long overdue Inter State Bar Games between KL Bar and Malacca Bar which was held in Malacca at the Malacca Club, Rotunda. 

The said games known as the KL Bar v Malacca Bar 3rd Series 2021 (R. Ponnudurai Challenge Trophy) was revived after more than 2 years hiatus due to unavoidable circumstances and the Covid-19 pandemic. The games were played at two venues, namely, the Malacca Club Rotunda and Sports Complex Klebang.

The Series started off with a welcoming Hi-Tea for all members of both Bars at 1.30 p.m. followed by the games proper. The games were fiercely contested and played in good spirits by members from both Bars.

A fellowship dinner, attended by a total of 55 members from both Bars was held at the Club Rotunda after the games which included the guest of honour, Y.A. Tuan Anand Ponnudurai, who despite just being posted to Penang a few weeks ago, made a special trip to Malacca to be with us and to present the Challenge Trophy, which held a special significant place in his heart.

The highlight of the dinner was the boat race which was won narrowly by the KL Bar. The fellowship and camaraderie between both the state bars was once again rekindled and both the state bars agreed to have this series continued annually.

Y.A. Tuan Anand Ponnudurai, then declared the Malacca Bar as the overall champions of the Series and presented the winning challenge trophy to our sports chairman Mr. Amritpal Singh.

On a final note, the Series was organized and played pursuant to the written consent and approval of the Jabatan Belia dan Sukan Negeri Melaka via letter dated 10 November 2021 from the Pengarah, Jabatan Belia dan Sukan, Negeri Melaka and with full and strict compliance of the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) and relevant Guidelines laid down by the Kementerian Belia dan Sukan Malaysia (KBS) and Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN).

eLAW DIGITAL LIBRARY

We wish to inform members that Malacca Bar Committee has signed an agreement with The Digital Library Sdn Bhd for a subscription of eLaw for 3 years. The agreement was supposed to commence from 1 July 2021, but was deferred to 1 August 2021 due to the nationwide lockdown.

An online training session was conducted on 17 June 2021 to enable members how to learn to use the online research platform. Pursuant thereto, a computer was delivered and was set up at the Malacca Bar Library in early August 2021 to enable members to avail themselves to this platform.

To further assist members who may still not know how to use the platform, we append below brief guidelines on how to use the platform:

  1. On the desktop page of the computer, click on Google Chrome.
  2. Once you are in Google Chrome, click on the eLaw icon.
  3. You will be directed to the eLaw page and you are ready to start your research.

Members are also requested to record their usage of the eLaw platform in the register book provided. Any member requiring further explanation may contact Andrew Law (IT and Website Chairman) or Teoh Keat Wee (Secretary) through Malacca Bar Secretariat for guidance.

DIALOGUE ENGAGEMENT SESSION WITH LEMBAGA PEMBIAYAAN PERUMAHAN SEKTOR AWAM (LPPSA)

On 14/10/2021, an online dialogue engagement session was held between Malacca Bar Committee via its Conveyancing Practice Subcommittee and Lembaga Pembiayaan Perumahan Sektor Awam (LPPSA) with the objective to :-

1) establish a two-way communication channel for mutual benefit of both stakeholders,
2) share information and latest updates which can be cascaded down to all members with regards LPPSA system,
3) further strengthen and achieve better satisfaction on customer service, and experience,
4) obtain feedback and recommendations from the Malacca Bar to further improve the current syatem.

Both parties have in principle agreed to conduct such a dialogue session every year.

The Conveyancing Practice Subcommittee shall prepare a circular to update members on the details.
